Ready to master the “Step of the Soul”? Join us for a high-energy cumbia class where we dive into the heart of Latin America’s most infectious dance. Whether you have two left feet or you’re a dance floor regular, this class will get you moving with confidence.
Mireille will guide you through:
🕺 4-Week Beginner Cumbia Series Program
- Week 1 – Foundations & Rhythm
- • Introduction to cumbia music and timing
- • Basic steps ( tropical and sonidera basics )
- • Understanding the beat ( quick quick slow – quick quick slow )
- • Intro to partner connection (closed/open hold)

- • Review of basic step
- • Cumbia prep for turns
- • Traveling basics (moving around the floor)
- • Intro to basic cumbia turns .
- • Partner timing and frame basics, partner work combination.
⸻ - Week 3 – Styling & Partner Patterns
- • Review turns
- • Adding simple styling (arm movement, body rhythm)
- • Cross-body lead variation (beginner-friendly)
- • Smooth transitions between moves

⸻ - Week 4 – Putting It All Together
- • Review all footwork and patterns
- • Combining moves into a short sequence
- • Musicality: dancing with the music
- • Confidence and flow on the dance floor
- • Social dancing practice + mini recap
Important Details
- No dance experience required: Whether you’ve never danced before or it’s been a while, you’re welcome here!
- No partner necessary: Come solo or bring a friend—either way, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to dance.
- Please wear non-marking shoe soles: This helps us keep our dance floor in great condition.

Instructor: Mireille Ruiz Born and raised in Mexico City, she grew up dancing and listening to Latin Music as part of her culture including Cumbia, Banda, ranchera, quebradita, etc.
she learned her first following Techniques, dancing with her father in every family fiesta.
she has a background in Mexican folklore, Jazz, tap dancing and gymnastics, she also is a percussionist, drummer and Montessori Teacher.
She grew up performing since she the age of 4. Bay Area bachata and cumbia dance instructor, Mireille has been teaching dance, performing, leading dance teams, around USA events, dance festivals, congresses since 2008
